Most Expensive Nose

Nikolai Gogol, a famous Russian satirist, once wrote of a nose that left its owner’s face to join the military. Perhaps Ilja Gort had that tale in mind when he had his nose insured for €5 million (nearly $8 million USD).

World’s most expensive nose
Nikolai Gogol and his nose.

The 47-year-old European claims his nose is his most important asset. Considering his vocation, that’s not surprising. Mr. Gort is a leading maker and tester of wine, working out of the Chateau de la Garde vineyard in the Bordeaux region of France.

Mr. Gort took the policy out from a Lloyd’s of London syndicate. Lloyd’s has previously insured other body parts, such as Marlene Dietrich’s legs, Keith Richards’ fingers and “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrarra’s smile. As part of the contract, Mr. Gort is not allowed to ride a motorcycle, nor is he allowed to be a boxer, a fire-breather or a knife-thrower’s assistant.

All things considered, it seems like it’d be worth the price alone to be able to tell your friends that they’re looking at the world’s most expensive nose.
